Where to even begin
Working at The Onion is a labor of love, and boy did I labor. I increased graphic production by 300%, allowing the creation of timely content that enabled us to engage and comment on what was happening in the world. I did this while rebuilding the department from the ground up after a cross country move. Here are some of the highlights of my time there.
I lead the charge on the 2012 election coverage developing and creating content sometimes in 15 minutes or less. All while maintaining complex production schedules, orchestrating video and photo shoots to produce high-quality content at unprecedented speeds. I barely slept; when I did, it was most likely under my desk.
I had a voice in content choices that became cultural touchstones. From Mass Shootings, Women’s Right’s, Joe Biden, and to a good number things, I’m a little nervous to call out on my website after some run-ins with some unsavory characters.
I had the time of my life solving some very creative problems such as: How would a horse ride a horse? What would a kangaroo look like if it went for a run? What would a planet of a billion Ron Pauls look like? And my all-time favorite; How to explain to a writer that there aren’t any real photos of actual live dinosaurs?
Videos
In my tenure at The Onion, I also had a hand in creating some fantastic videos that pushed the limits of what could be accomplished in a couple of hours with a shoestring budget. I had so much fun casting, producing, occasionally shooting and directing, these very fun shorts.
Changing the Way the Onion Does Social
On top of all that, We changed how our audience engaged with our brand. We pivoted from a print outlet that happened to have a website, to a content creator that reached our audience where they live and upped the rate we created content to suit their appetite.
Also there are some books
I helped make some books, they’re nice too.
